ABOUT THE ELECTRIC
DISTRICT SIX,
CAPE TOWN

The Electric grew out of a small idea in the heart of District Six — a neighbourhood with a long, complicated, beautiful history.

A place with a past much bigger than us. We’ve always tried to keep our role simple: look after the space, serve good food and juice, and build community the honest way.

WHO WE ARE

A bottle of orange-colored juice on a rustic wooden surface, surrounded by pieces of pink guava, orange slices, fresh mint leaves, ginger root, and a small amount of honey or syrup.

A CREATIVE HUB

  • We’re a juice bar, café, co-working space, gallery, studio, pop-up venue, and home for the local creative community.

  • A place where freelancers plug in, artists show work, friends meet for coffee, dogs nap on blankets, and nights turn Electric.

  • Everything we do is built on simple things:
good food, warm people, intentional design, and a deep love for this neighbourhood.

PURPOSE OVER PRETENSE

  • We believe in doing things with care, keeping the space open to everyone, and letting the culture of District Six guide the rhythm of the room.

    • No pretense.

    • No waste where possible.

    • No unnecessary frills.

    • Just honest food, conscious choices, and a space that feels like home.

  • Our approach is rooted in sustainability, creativity, and community — the three pillars that keep this building alive.

MAXIMUM INTENTION

  • Every bottle returned means less waste and more reuse — a small, easy way we stay mindful of our impact.

    • Mostly plastic-free

    • Nut pulp reused in our bakes

    • Food waste → Streetscapes community garden

    • Local growers supported wherever we can

  • Dogs are welcome.
    Bikes are welcome.
    Neighbours are welcome.
Creatives, freelancers, film crews, and friends — everyone is welcome.

The Electric is built around the people who fill the space every day.
This café belongs to the community as much as it does to us.

BORN FROM THE ASHES.

The Electric began as a burnt-out auto electrician’s workshop — a charred shell on Canterbury Street.

Janette saw possibility in the rubble and rebuilt the space piece by piece, keeping its industrial bones while giving it a new life. What rose from the fire wasn’t just a café — it was a symbol of reinvention in District Six.

A place where old stories meet new ideas, and where the neighbourhood’s energy continues to spark something fresh every day.

THIS IS THE ELECTRIC.

A reborn building.
A neighbourhood gathering point.
A cultural landmark in the making.

Come for the food.
Stay for the energy.
Become part of the community.
